Remembering Our Marek
Memorial Service 8:30am Saturday, October 9th
National Seashore Visitor Center Amphitheater Race Point Road in Provincetown
At 1:30 PM on May 13, 2004, Marek Kryszkiewicz left his body.
Born in Germany in 1943 under difficult wartime circumstances, Marek recognized all people as citizens of the world, bound together by a common humanity. He was known for breaking through stereotypes and preconceived notions in a whimsical and loving way.
Marek won the Junior Gymnastics Championship in Germany as a youth. Later he trained as a dancer, touring the world with the Netherlands Dance Theatre and other companies. Eventually he came to teach and dance in New York City, where he met and married Jamie Nishman in 1980.
Marek and Jamie did everything together. They undertook a wide variety of commercial enterprises, including establishing "Silk & Feathers", a popular boutique in Provincetown, MA. They traveled the world together. They also developed and continually explored a yoga practice that included eighteen years of teaching at the Provincetown Community Center, leading retreats in Playa del Carmen and years of involvement with the Kripalu Yoga Center in Lenox, MA.
Yoga brought Marek's love of movement and the human body together with his spiritual yearnings. In recent years he found fulfillment in his heart with his beloved Jamie, their daughter Natasha, age 20 months, and their very special dog, Tashi.
Marek will be remembered for sowing seeds of kindness and possibility among all people; for his electrifying smile and dancing eyebrows; for his love of bright colors (especially chartreuse and orange); for being a magic-making prankster; for his leopard skin thongs; for his quirky and outrageous store window designs; for his hilarious use of American idioms; for his walks though the salt marshes with his many dog friends; and for his insatiable love of life, people and the out of doors.
A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Donations in Marek's memory can be made to: CASAS or Provincetown REP.
